Smallville to Big Screen Superman?

Filed under: — dan @ 11:47 pm

Can he be both young and old Clark Kent? If he takes the Superman role, will someone take over the Smallville Clark? Or will Smallville be cancelled? If he takes the role, will he be jinxed like Christopher Reeve or Dean Cain (heard from him lately?) Or will he be jinxed no matter what? What about Lana Lang? Yes, what about Lana? That’s the most pressing question here. Surely, she’ll be in a movie with a bigger role than she had in Eurotrip. :P

Producers may be one step closer to casting their Clark Kent for the new “Superman” movie, according to fan site Superman-V. Director Bryan Singer (“X-Men”) has reportedly offered the role (along with a multi-film deal) to a well-known television Clark Kent. Apparently, the actor has a few weeks to decide if he will don the tights and cape.

Tom Welling (TV’s “Smallville,” “Cheaper by the Dozen”) is the actor with the offer. Superman-V says that their source doubts he will accept the offer because he has been reluctant to play Superman in the past.

DirecTV Cuts Piracy, Loses Money

Filed under: — dan @ 11:40 pm

Do we see a correlation here? Anyways, they seem to be in some doo-doo, as one of the PamAmSat’s satellites will fail sooner than expected. Thus, the buyout firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. now have the option to back out of the deal to buy DirecTV. So how does a company that shuts down piracy lose money for the quarter? They just added nearly a MILLION customers during this time period, too!
—-
The company, based in El Segundo, Calif., reported a net loss of $13.3 million, or 1 cent per share for the three months ending June 30, compared to net income of $21.6 million, or 2 cents per share in the same period last year.

DirecTV in the United States added a record 944,000 owned and operated subscriptions during the quarter.

DirecTV said its revenue from its record number of subscribers was offset by increased subscriber acquisition costs and higher retention and upgrade costs.

The company also took a $60 million charge during the quarter related to stock-based compensation, severance and employee retention plans.

Craigslist IPO?

Damn, $25M a year? Have you seen the site? My new heroes! :)
—-
By my back-of-the-envelope calculations, the site, which employs only 14 people, will be making about $25 million per year on 12 percent of its available ad inventory. That’s peanuts for most public companies.

No ‘Lez’ for Scrabble on ESPN

Filed under: — dan @ 11:00 pm

Heh, no ‘lez’ and no ‘redskins’. Doesn’t it sort of defeat the nature of the game, if you exclude certain words from play? Dang, lez is worth 12 points. Gotta remember that one. :)
—-
In the final round, eventual champion Trey Wright played the word “lez,” which was on a list of offensive words not allowed during the tournament.

Normally, no word is off-limits, but because the games were being taped for broadcast on ESPN, certain terms had been deemed inappropriate, including the three-letter slang for lesbian.

Formula for the Perfect Scary Movie

Filed under: — dan @ 9:12 pm

That sounds easy enough. But what about nudity or # of young women? Formula’s outdated already!
—-
Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, starring Jack Nicholson, has been named the perfect scary film, according to a new mathematical formula.

The secret of making a scary movie has been calculated by university experts.

(es+u+cs+t) squared +s+ (tl+f)/2 + (a+dr+fs)/n + sin x – 1.

Where:
es = escalating music
u = the unknown
cs = chase scenes
t = sense of being trapped
s = shock
tl = true life
f = fantasy
a = character is alone
dr = in the dark
fs = film setting
n = number of people
sin = blood and guts
1 = stereotypes

Filed under: — dan @ 3:51 pm

Women of the world rejoice! Dang, that’ll be 25 years in 2011 that she’s been on the air. I feel old now. Do any men watch this show? Besides when there’s someone , ahem, hot on?

Oprah Winfrey can start making big anniversary plans. Winfrey signed with King World Productions to continue her top-rated “The Oprah Winfrey Show” through the 2010-11 television season, which would be its 25th year in syndication.

“The thought of taking the show to its 25th anniversary is both exhilarating and challenging,” Winfrey said.

Portable PSone Before PSP Launch

Filed under: — dan @ 3:28 pm

Nice hacking involved to create this behemoth. But cmon, open back with spinning CD? I see lawsuits coming! Nicely done home project, though he did outsource to get the molds done, and at quite a fee. $500 almost seems like a bargain for a PalmPSone :P

Sony PS3 to Use Blu-Ray

Filed under: — dan @ 11:55 am

Well, this will give a jumpstart for Blu-Ray, if they can manage to release the PS3 before HD DVD discs are out, at least. I’ve seen a demo of Blu-Ray playing a high definition recording, and it looked great to me. Sony sure can’t figure out how to make an iPod killer (Hello, people want to play MP3s, not ATRAC crap!), but they have been pretty good on formats ever since Betamax… though MicroMV never did quite catch on and is a dead format now.
—-
TOKYO—According to Kyodo News, Sony officials announced today that they will use Blu-ray Disc technology in their next-generation console, most commonly referred to as the PlayStation 3. Sony revealed its decision at a press conference held by the Blu-ray Disc Founders (BDF), an organization committed to developing and standardizing the next-generation optical disc format. The BDF also used the occasion to announce that it will finalize the specifications for the read-only version of Blu-ray Discs (BD-ROMs) by September 30.

Ever Wonder How Much Gold is in Goldschlager?

Filed under: — dan @ 11:38 am

I haven’t had any in years, but I have always been curious… Pretty good commentary by the cockeyed crew. Worth a read.
—-
Unfortunately, the gold weighed less than a tenth of a gram (0.1g). It wouldn’t even register on my scale.

This thin smear of gold, clumped together on Jane’s fingertip, was worth less than $1.38.

Yahoo to Change Red Logo?

Filed under: — dan @ 10:15 am

Well, they are sort of pretty darn well known for having a bright red logo. I think it’d be marketing suicide, well not that bad, but people will clamor for the logo of old… A white logo on purple background does not sound very spiffy at all. New Coke, anyone?
—-
This is news to me, but I learned at this conference that Yahoo’s official color is purple. In fact, Ken and Grace revealed a little known fact that the only reason the Yahoo! Logo is red is because they couldn’t find a shade of purple that looked right. Yahoo’s new branding strategy includes a deep purple background with the Yahoo! logo clearly contrasting in strong white letters.
