DirecTV Cuts Piracy, Loses Money
Do we see a correlation here? Anyways, they seem to be in some doo-doo, as one of the PamAmSat’s satellites will fail sooner than expected. Thus, the buyout firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. now have the option to back out of the deal to buy DirecTV. So how does a company that shuts down piracy lose money for the quarter? They just added nearly a MILLION customers during this time period, too!

The company, based in El Segundo, Calif., reported a net loss of $13.3 million, or 1 cent per share for the three months ending June 30, compared to net income of $21.6 million, or 2 cents per share in the same period last year.
DirecTV in the United States added a record 944,000 owned and operated subscriptions during the quarter.
DirecTV said its revenue from its record number of subscribers was offset by increased subscriber acquisition costs and higher retention and upgrade costs.
The company also took a $60 million charge during the quarter related to stock-based compensation, severance and employee retention plans.
