Miami Vice Movie Casted?

Miami Vice Crockett and Tubbs
At least Michael Mann will helm, Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx actually make a pretty good duo for Crockett and Tubbs. I liked good ol’ Colin in S.W.A.T. and Jamie Foxx is getting his groove on lately, in Collateral and in the upcoming Ray (a Ray Charles movie).

Windows XP SP2 Auto Restart BS

Windows XP SP2 Box
This is complete BS. So I set some of my Windows XP SP2 Pro boxes to automatically update when there’s new Windows OS updates available. No big deal, I usually manually update Windows, but I thought this time it’d save me some time from leeching the big updates myself. Big mistake! There were some new bugfixes yesterday, and so my Windows boxes happily leeched away. Now, one box, I was running some programs, so I manually did a Windows Update. After installing the update, Windows kept on bugging me to restart. Incessantly, annoyingly, and many times over. I kept saying no, as I was doing something on the machine. But before I went to sleep, I forgot to restart for Windows’ benefit.

I woke up this morning, and the box had magically rebooted. I thought I lost power, but another PC (on the same power strip) wasn’t rebooted at all. WTF! I didn’t ask it to do that! Leave me alone Windows! Geez. Another box that had automatic updates on had already rebooted too when I turned on the machine. Ugh, pathetic, ya know, NO MEANS NO Microsoft! What if I was working on the cure to cancer and had it all figured out, but forgot to save my progress last night? It would have been lost and the world would be a worst place. Okay, so I was just leeching some music, but that’s another story… Time to turn off that automatic update bullshit now…

Amazon Going After Netflix Soon

A shocker to me, at least. Interesting that Amazon would go after the Netflix market, seeing as Netflix is so entrenched as the top online DVD rental service (and by far). Unless Amazon has a grandoise plan, it’ll be hard to beat Netflix’s quick service and roughly 30 distribution centers. The latest recorded number of Amazon distro centers I could find was 7, but that was back in 2000. That is a start, it sure beats Wal-Mart and Blockbuster. Netflix has 2.23 million subscribers already, too. I don’t exactly buy the DVDs being around as long as the gas engine, though. We’ll run out of oil sooner or later, that or the enviroNazis will force hybrids or non-polluting engines upon us.

Amazon.com plans to enter the DVD rental business in a move that will put the online retail giant in direct competition with Netflix.

News of Amazon’s intentions were disclosed Thursday afternoon by Netflix founder and CEO Reed Hastings during the company’s earnings call. Netflix said it would cut prices to ensure future growth in the face of competition from Blockbuster, Wal-Mart Stores and soon Amazon.

“We think DVDs will be more dominant in five years than they are today,” Hastings said. “The evolution to downloading will be slow. The DVD will last as long as the gas engine.”

Nicky Hilton
Aww, don’t tell me we were right! Well, to her credit, Nicky Hilton’s marriage lasted longer than Britney’s first 55 hour one. Wait, so will Britney’s second one last longer than Nicky’s? Gee, ya think 21 was a bit young? So, now about that pre-nup…

Nicky Hilton is reportedly annulling her marriage.

The hotel heiress, who is the younger sister of reality TV star Paris, is “working on an annulment” from husband Todd Meister, as the marriage is “beyond solid”, according to America’s Us Weekly magazine. Friends also say, at 21, Nicky feels she is too young to be a wife.

ID Required to Buy/Rent Games in Canada

Ha, and you thought Canadians were all weed-smoking hippies with all the freedom in the world. Yes, they have more nudity on TV, but no, you can’t buy your GTA: San Andreas without an ID. Nothing like good ol’ violence and a coalition of parents to force the gaming industry into IDing everyone.

You already need your photo ID to buy booze or cigarettes and now you’ll need it to rent or buy certain video and computer games.

Canadian retailers and entertainment software makers Thursday were to announce a broad initiative aimed at curbing children’s access to violent and age-restricted games, including asking customers to produce photographic identification in some cases.

Google Desktop Search is Here!

Google Desktop Search
Nice find Jimmy! The long anticipated Google Desktop Search program is here, I’m just about to download it and give it a run through. It needs a whopping 1GB of free disk space for it to even install. Guess I gotta unload some MP3s first, and also, it only runs on Windows XP or Windows 2000 SP3 or above…

Apparently, no Gmail support in the search right now, the search is instantaneous just like Google. Search Engine Lowdown has a good thorough review of it.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – Online search engine leader Google Inc. is setting its sights on the computer desktop with a new software program that promises to scour through the clutter of documents, e-mails, instant messages and other files stored on hard drives.

The free desktop search program, unveiled Thursday at http://desktop.google.com, marks Google’s latest attempt to become even more indispensable to the millions of people who entrust the company to find virtually anything on the Web.
